Star of the Sea
Star of the Sea (Stella Maris) is one of the many titles given to Our Lady.
Saint Thomas Aquinas, in his commentary on the Hail Mary, wrote:
“She was free from all these curses and "blessed among women," because she took away these curses and in their place brought blessings, opening the gate of Paradise. And so the name of Mary, which is also interpreted "Star of the Sea" befits her; for just as sailors are guided into port by the star of the sea, so also Christians are guided by Mary unto glory.”
A description for this title is also found in the following twelfth-century prayer from Saint Bernard of Clairvaux:
If the winds of temptation arise;
If you are driven upon the rocks of tribulation look to the star, call on Mary;
If you are tossed upon the waves of pride, of ambition, of envy, of rivalry, look to the star and call on Mary.
Taking her title further is this explicit reference which we find in the writing by Saint Paschasius Radbertus (d. 865):
Mary, Star of the Sea, must be followed in faith and morals lest we capsize amidst the storm-tossed waves of the sea. She will illumine us to believe in Christ, born of her for the salvation of the world.
The ocean, like our lives, can be turbulent or peaceful. During the restless times, prayer becomes a gift of peace. During calm times, it draws us more deeply into that peace.
There is a sparkle created when sunlight casts itself on the ocean’s surface. It is stimulating yet calming. It is superficial yet deep. As we become captured by the light on the surface, it becomes easy to forget the distance downward. Such is true with any reflection. We see the surface and fail to remember the depth.
I like the title, Star of the Sea, because it parallels the echo of sunlight on the ocean. It is comfortable to think of Mary as our beautiful mother and reflect in the sense of peace she evokes, but I believe we sometimes overlook her strength. As we dedicate this rosary to Mary, Star of the Sea, we pray for a realization of all her facets and the peace she brings.
We have chosen to symbolize the ocean with color and reflection. Capri blue
Machine cut crystal are the Aves which sparkle as the sea in the sun’s reflection. The German crystal which spaces the turquoise, adds additional sparkle.
Further symbolizing Mary’s title as Star of the Sea, are the genuine shell Paters which are flanked with Swarovski crystal roundels. In hand cast bronze, a Stella Maris center and shield design crucifix complete this limited edition rosary which measures 21”.

“Let us then cast ourselves at the feet of this good Mother, and embracing them let us not depart until she blesses us, and accepts us for her children.”
