Prayer to Our Lady Of San Juan
Oh Most Holy and Immaculate Virgen of San Juan, be our faithful companion on our life's journey. We thank you because many have found in this Shrine a place where we feel at home with you and with our brothers and sisters. Help us to come closer to your Son, Jesus; that we may find in Him the Way of Life which gives meaning to moments of sorrow and happiness in our earthly pilgrimage.
The story of the Virgin of San Juan begins in 1542, when a Spanish priest, Father Miguel de Bologna, brought an image of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception to the village. The story continues in 1623, when the daughter of Indian parents fell seriously ill, and it was predicted that she would soon die. Her parents prayed to Our Lady and the girl was healed.
The story of this miracle became known and many people, including Spanish and people whose ancestry was
mixed White European and Amerindian, came to pray
to the statue.
This statue of the virgin became known as Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos, separate from her original identity as the Immaculate Conception. From the early 17th century, a fair was held each year around the anniversary of the statue's installation in the shrine (November 30). This fair grew in popularity until the middle of the 19th century when presence began to decline. It was ended in the early 1900’s. A fiesta, however, is still held.
Construction began on the present church in 1732. The church was built in the Mexican baroque style of the time, with an ornamented facade surrounded by the plainer lower walls of the bell towers. Although the towers were not completed until 1790, the Virgin was installed in the new church in 1769. Pope Pius XII recognized the church as a basilica in 1972. The church was elevated to the Cathedral of the Diocese of San Juan de los Lagos by Pope Paul VI.
This rosary is dedicated to Our Lady of San Juan.
Honoring the fair which was held each November, in honor of the shrine, we have chosen a golden autumn color for this rosary. Aves are golden AB glass from the Czech Republic. The beads sparkle symbolize the light of gratitude felt by the Indian parents when their child was healed. The same color, in a smaller bead, spaces the Aves and takes us to the square, frosted sea glass, Paters. A pictorial Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos center and golden enamel cross complete this sparkling rosary which measures 21”.
